The Region of Madeira is a chain of islands that belong to Portugal, and today bring tourism. To get here this chain of islands with Madeira as the leader has gone through a few different stages in history worth mentioning. Events that occured in the 15th century when this treasure was discovered. Joao Goncalves is the name that is tied to the history of Madeira. This sailor discovered this chain of islands in 1419 and giving the Portuguese crown the honor to claim this territory and name it´s first governors. In the same century these islands began to be colonized and work in agriculture. The volcanic origin and a few fires made this land fertile and was great for cultivating sugar cane and grapes.
Christopher Columbus stretched it´s relationship with this island a few years before the discovery of America, and left here so satisfied that a few years later he made it his residence.
In the 16th century they suffered constant pirate attacks from the British and the French and besieged the island on a few occasions, the city of Funchal was the worst hit.
In the same century Felipe II of Spain proclaimed himself King of Portugal and Madeira went on to form part of the Spanish Empire for almost an entire century, until Charles II of England conquered the islands.
In the 19th century things didn´t go to well in this island. Illnesses in people and the land caused a devastating effect on the vineyards and the rest of the plantations. In the 20th century during World War I, Funchal was bombarded by the Germans.
After World War II this region especially Madeira began to have tourism as it´s main source of income, an opening that even until today has made this region live off tourism. |
